Looking at the data set   {9,12,14,16,17,18,20,27,33}, it's easy to find the minimum (smallest) value:  That's 9.  The largest (max) is 33.

There are 9 data points here, and the data has already been arranged from smallest to largest.  The point in the middle of this lineup is 17.  This is the median.
